Inspiration: Sunrise with Sea Monsters (1845) Oil on canvas
I love this painting of Turners, although reputedly unfinished, I find the softness of colour in the sunset and the ambiguity of the subject matter fascinating; are they sea monsters or are they, according to Tate Gallery, just fish?
In my interpretation of the original, I wanted to make the sea monster slightly more obvious, as if it is unashamedly propelling itself out of the sea to have a good look around! I used collage to depict its eyes, they were images of filaments of light bulbs just to add another element of energy to the scene.
